My Favorite Location Tips for Senior Portraits | Wisconsin High School Senior Portraits

Whenever I book a senior portrait session, typically the first question I am asked is “Where should we go?”. I am always more than happy to supply a list of locations to folks, near or far. But, I thought I would take some time here to delve into the meat of that question: “Where should we go?” and “WHY go there?”

I hope to give a little insight into my own thought process with regards to on-location Senior shooting. Who knows, it may give you a whole new outlook on the whole Senior Portrait experience!

MY FAVORITE LOCAL SPOTS

Every place in the world that has a concentration of portrait photographers (which, based on Facebook alone, seems to be every single corner of the Earth) has its “go to” places. Those spots that are always CRAWLING with photographers every weekend and any time the weather gets amazing.

Here’s a secret: I don’t HATE those spots. I see it as a HUGE advantage if I know a spot backwards and forwards. I also see it as a chance to get creative. How many ways can I approach the same area? How can I make it different every time?

In the Stateline WI area, we have a few spots that are wildly popular:

IRONTEK DRIVE DOWNTOWN BELOIT WI

This one is a relatively new “hot spot” and for good reason. It’s lit “spine” of twinkle lights at night, plus its big covered parking garage with old brick and wood, was tailor made for photographers. It's kind of a portrait artists playground.

But, it been USED in the last few years. I don’t know how many portraits have been taken on the new bridge spanning the Rock River, but it has to be bordering on millions.

But, I will continue to offer it up as an option, because OPTIONS. There are so many ways to creatively use that area….including thinking outside the box and venturing into nooks that may not seem very “portrait worthy”.

I always use the bridge, of course, because people love the bridge……but I also ask them to “trust me” when I tell them to crawl behind a dumpster where some cool chipped brick and colorful weeds may be hiding.

BECKMAN MILL BELOIT, WI
The thoughts on Beckman Mill can vary and I’d be lying if I said haven’t ONCE groaned (just a little) in my 13 years at yet another Beckman Mill shoot. But, here’s the thing: Beckman Mill is popular with photographers for a reason. Several reasons. For one, the options there are plentiful. Two, it’s free. Three, it’s beautiful. And Four, it’s big enough to make your way around and avoid the thirty other photographers who may be there.

So, I always try to be totally understanding and upbeat with Beckman Mill, because I get why people pick it. I’d probably pick it too. Beckman Mill is a perfect example of a place where you have to WORK at being innovative, lest you give your clients the same old “stand in front of the barn” picture everyone else has.

MAGNOLIA BLUFF EVANSVILLE, WI

I have a soft spot for Magnolia Bluff. A long time ago (longer than I like to admit to), it was the place kids went if they wanted to escape their parents for a bit. ;) But, it is stunningly gorgeous, especially in the fall. I’m never sad when anyone wants to use it.

GET OUTSIDE THE BOX : THINKING OF INNOVATIVE WAYS TO USE OLD PLACES
I love a challenge. I love to hunt and peck around an area until I find a place where the light is hitting just right or I see a way to frame a subject. Honestly, that’s why you hire a professional, right? They see things in a way a “person with a camera” doesn’t.

I always try to earn my client’s trust and then explain my thought process (best I can…..I recognize sometimes I may sound insane)…..but typically the results speak for themselves.

I love TEXTURE. Even if I’ve been somewhere a million times (like the picture on the LEFT that was taken up by the old stone watertower in Beloit) or never been somewhere before (like the picture on the RIGHT that was taken at a private home), I se…

I love TEXTURE. Even if I’ve been somewhere a million times (like the picture on the LEFT that was taken up by the old stone watertower in Beloit) or never been somewhere before (like the picture on the RIGHT that was taken at a private home), I seek out COLOR and TEXTURE as interesting backgrounds.

Sometimes, I don’t WANT people to know right away where a picture was taken. I feel like I’ve done my job in that respect, if someone can say “That was those old, spiderweb infested bushes outside the watertower?!?!”

Yup. And they look awesome.

But what I saw here were bright primary colors and movement.

The main theme here is TRUST THE VISION OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER. If they say they see something, go with it! Now, that’s not to say every grand idea works out. Sometimes I’ll set the light up and shoot it and “Ugh….hate it….moving on”. But, I’d say 9…

Now, that’s not to say every grand idea works out. Sometimes I’ll set the light up and shoot it and “Ugh….hate it….moving on”. But, I’d say 90% of the time….my instincts were right on.

Like the above LEFT photo was just on a walkway in Downtown Beloit, but it was overcast and there were these black crows flying all over the place. It was moody AF. So, I shot the mood.

The picture top RIGHT was taken right behind Beloit’s Walmart. No joke. I had ALWAYS pictured shooting the wood divider back there, and one of my seniors was game!

The picture on the bottom? Parking lot. But LOOK AT THAT SKY. Pretty sure I made the senior stop what they were doing and run over to that area of the lot. Head in a clear spot and best view of the clouds.

ATHLETIC PORTRAITS THAT DON’T BORE YOU TO TEARS

Pictures in your athletic gear are a given when it comes to Senior Portraits. Making those editorial, creative, and innovative can take some planning.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have access to local playing fields, but even if I don’t, there are enough “sports adjacent” places in the area where excellent sports pictures can be taken if you don’t have direct access to your home field (especially during COVID)

This picture was taken in a dug out (I believe this was Snappers Field). Dug outs can be found in most public baseball diamonds or softball places as well.

Access to the home field IS always wonderful, because of the colors, the signage, and the comfort of the subject

On the bleachers? Cool. UNDER the bleachers? Little used area and ALSO cool.

Let’s say there’s a huge pandemic raging and you can’t get access to your gym (hey, it could happen!)…..you can take sports themed pictures ANYWHERE. These were in Downtown Janesville. A recognizable area for a Janesville high schooler.

THE ON-LOCATION STUDIO

When people fret about where to go, I always try to ease their worries with the fact that I can pretty much shoot ANYWHERE. Give me a garbage dump…..we’ll make some freakin’ awesome art. But I really love making studio-type portraits on-location. It stretches my lighting ability and let’s me offer studio portraits (which some schools require) even without a studio.

Studio portraits can be shot ANYWHERE (even your own garage) if the shooter knows what they’re doing.

This portrait was taken in a BRIGHT swimming pool area. With lots of natural light. How, you ask? Crafty lighting.

MAKE IT ABOUT YOU, NOT ABOUT WHERE YOU ARE

The secret sauce in Type A Senior Portraits is that I can make portraits anywhere……and I can make GOOD portraits anywhere. What HELPS is when the senior brings an AWESOME idea. I can’t tell you how much I love to get creative RIGHT ON THE SPOT when the senior hands me some off-the-wall hobby or “prop” they want to use.

So, even if you think it’s not worth incorporating….PLEASE….lug your cello into the woods…..tell me your geekiest idea…..it’s magic making.

The actual location starts to mean LESS when the idea can be incorporated anywhere.

One of the most FUN aspects of shooting somewhere I’ve never shot before is using things I just “come upon”, like this car. Guys….PINK. VINTAGE. CAR. Just freaking sitting in downtown Waterloo, BEGGING TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED. The senior didn’t have to …

The senior didn’t have to specify an exact location for this….just “hey, let’s check out what downtown Waterloo has to offer”….a LOT, apparently. The senior grew up there, knew the area, and it MEANT something to them.

And that pink car? Well, hot damn, that made my whole season.

The Senior loved Doctor Who…..and I owned a TARDIS. Match made in heaven. Don’t be afraid to bring me your wackiest hobbies and loves. We’ll work ‘em in! Anywhere. This picture was taken in some overgrown weeds behind a building. You grew up on a …

You grew up on a farm? Want to use some old farming equipment…..I’m totally game. All you really need is the space to park it.

If you are completely stuck on where to shoot, definitely pick my brain. I’ll probably ask you some questions on your vision and ideas…..hobbies and interests. But, don’t be afraid of picking an old standard (we’ll make it not-so-standard, I promise) or trying something outside the box.

Just remember:

* GET PERMISSION TO SHOOT PLACES (Don’t be that photographer that ruins it for everyone. With that said….STAY OFF THE RAILROAD TRACKS!)

* Trust your photographer’s instincts (and photographers, KEEP PEOPLE SAFE)

* Have fun!!

My Favorite Wedding Locations (and One I Need to Book a Wedding For Because I'm Obsessed) | Wisconsin Wedding Photographer

Wedding venues and event locations have had a TOUGH go of it in 2020. With very few events actually happening and the ones that ARE happening being hampered by COVID restrictions, it has been far from a great year to own and run a venue.

I wanted to do a little write up of some of my favorites to shine a little light on some well known (or not so well known) locations to have your event. When the “smoke clears” and we are able to gather and celebrate in earnest again, I hope you will consider some of these great locations for your event.

And there’s ONE location that has been absolutely elusive to me since I started shooting weddings in 2008.

You’ll find that one at the end of that article. I LOVE it….adore it even….if I could re-do my wedding, I would hop all over it…..so if you’re planning a wedding there….HIT. ME. UP.

Without further adieu, here’s my favorites and places that deserve praise for being awesome.

BELOIT CLUB BELOIT, WI

I’m probably biased here. I grew up in Beloit, WI. When I was a 22 year old who just started dating my now-husband, I had found a job waiting tables at what WAS the “Country Club of Beloit”….one of the oldest Country Clubs in Wisconsin. And, not to be snarky, but damn if the building didn’t show its age. It was….charmingly shabby. Sort of. My husband and I had our own wedding reception there. Water stains on the dropped ceiling and all.

Enter Diane Hendricks. Billionaire philanthropist. She razed the old club and built the Beloit Club a handful of years ago. To say it’s a massive improvement would be an understatement. It’s GORGEOUS. The reception hall is well appointed and really beautiful. The grounds are sprawling and wonderful for portraits. Their food is top notch.

GORDON LODGE BAILEY’S HARBOR, WI

Gordon Lodge in Bailey’s Harbor, WI is not only GORGEOUS, but they have the distinction of having some of the best “customer service” and attention to detail I’ve ever witnessed as a vendor. They have it TOGETHER and every time I’ve shot a wedding there, they’ve been nothing but organized, professional, and attentive. Even to the other outside vendors. Four stars…..for sure!

HARLEY MUSEUM MILWAUKEE, WI

The Harley Museum is currently closed due to COVID, but when they ARE open and hosting events, they’re one of my favorites. Mostly because they offer a truly unique backdrop for portraits. They allow shooting within the museum for folks having their wedding and/or reception there, and it opens the door for some pretty killer images. Inside AND out. You don’t have to be the “biker type” to enjoy it either! It’s a truly “Milwaukee” venue.

CINDY’S ROOFTOP CHICAGO, IL

If you’re having a small, intimate “mini-wedding” reception but still want it to scream CHICAGO!…..I love Cindy’s Rooftop. First, their food. OMG, the food. So, so good. Second, you can’t beat the view. The rooftop terrace overlooks Millennium Park. I don’t think there’s a better view in the city, if you ask me (I get that I don’t LIVE in the city, so I may be just starstruck by the park view…..but damn….it’s purrty).

The best bit is Cindy’s is on top of the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, which is GREAT for portraits (just make sure you get permission first).

BAYFIELD, WI

Yes. I get it. Bayfield, WI isn’t a “venue”, it’s a city. But, stay with me. I shot a wedding in Bayfield a few years ago and absolutely fell in LOVE with the whole area. The harbor is magical. The little downtown area is quaint and as if it’s from another era. I started making plans to retire there after only being there a few hours. Bayfield is a GREAT place for a “destination wedding” within your own state. It’s like another world.

THE IVY ROOM CHICAGO, IL

The Ivy Room wins with me simply due to pure BEAUTY. It’s like a little secret garden in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the big city. The portrait options rock and even the indoor venue location is pretty stellar. But, if you’re having a Chicago city wedding, you can’t beat it’s garden area….it’s just lovely.

ORCHARD RIDGE FARMS PAVILION ROCKTON, IL

Maybe it’s the Wisconsin in me, I’m a sucker for a good farm. Orchard Ridge is more of an upscale “farm-ish” type venue (you get a bit of the country/pastural feeling without the cow poop smell). It’s grounds are absolutely lovely and their organization reception-wise is really fabulous. They’re able to host larger gatherings, so once that’s a “thing” again, I can highly recommend putting them on their list of places to check out.

SERENDIPITY FARM WATERLOO, WI

The term “rustic” has been a TAD overused in the wedding circles in recent years, but it fits Serendipity Farm well. I grew to love this place quickly because its a restored Victorian farmstead and that is all the WAY up my alley. It’s simply precious….the barn is indeed straight up “rustic” (if that’s your thing). The grounds are heavenly and the house! OMG, the house. I could have moved right in.

PABST BEST PLACE MILWAUKEE, WI

I’ve never ACTUALLY looked, but I’m pretty sure I’ve shot more weddings/receptions here than anywhere else. It’s a place I’ve visited and shot MANY, MANY times and I never really get sick of it. They keep improving and adding on…..the surrounding area is very usable and has neat little nooks and crannies. My one complaint, if I have one, is that they got rid of easy “wide angle” access to the lit-up Pabst sign by putting parking directly in front of it……but that’s a small gripe. I can and have worked around that. It was just better “before”. But, all in all, I still have a love for Pabst Best Place.

OLD WORLD WISCONSIN EAGLE, WI

The first time I visited OWW was for a field trip. If I remember correctly, the school gave us the option to “dress up” in “pioneer” clothing for the trip. Pretty sure I was the only person who obliged. My grandmother was a chaperone for the trip and we bonded over our mutual love for living history museums. I made her take me back for my birthday that following summer. Since becoming a mother, I’ve taken Betty a handful of times…..each time making her dress the part because I’m the mom and I say so.

I have been obsessed with OWW ever since. It’s HUGE, there’s so much to see and it’s such a relaxing day just taking your time taking in the sites, the smells, the sounds, and the feel of the place.

If I could do my wedding over again…..I’d do it there.

Here’s the thing: I’VE NEVER SHOT A WEDDING AT OLD WORLD WISCONSIN.

Thirteen years, people. 250+ weddings. NEVER ONCE (with the exception of 2nd shooting gig about 10 years ago where I didn’t even get to do portraits!) have I shot a wedding at my most favorite place in the whole wide world.

Travesty! I know!

So here’s the deal……post-COVID madness……Y’ALL HAVE TO HOOK ME UP. I want to shoot there so badly. There’s SO much potential there…..the grounds are just a history lover’s playground. The buildings! The costumed docents! I am a complete nerd for OWW.

So, if you are willing to make my little photographer dreams come true, I would be eternally grateful. Old World Wisconsin is my white whale.

How to Celebrate a Disaster - 2020 Year in Review | Wisconsin Wedding Photography | Wisconsin Small Business

I typically do a “End of the Year” rundown (as well as a Best Of Weddings Contest) every year. For thirteen years I’ve celebrated highs and lows and revisited my favorite shots.

But 2020 ain’t like any other year. Is it?

2020 has been a rotten egg filled garbage bag covered in baby poo within a dumpster that has been lit aflame and sent rolling down a hill dotted with pot holes.

In a word, it SUCKED.

For everyone.

I don’t know anyone who has had the “best year ever”. I don’t know anyone, outside of influencers spewing toxic positivity, who have thought this year was anything but a continuous onslaught of crap. Lessons learned? Oh sure. We all learned things. But, dude……I could have done without 12 months of “meaningful lessons” peppered on top of a crap sandwich that was a pandemic.

We all just survived the best we could.

I survived about 15 lbs heavier.
I survived with a renewed appreciation for teachers because HOLY. CRAP. do they not get paid enough to deal with all of this **gestures wildly**
I survived realizing that yes….you can come to the end of TV and the internet.
I survived discovering that when the going gets tough….some people are simply not willing to even do the bare minimum for others. Which, I kind of already knew but was disappointing nonetheless.

But through it all, the important part of everything was survival. Survival of our family unit, survival of our health and our loved ones, and survival of my business. I am not so naïve to believe that everyone was so lucky. We personally know people who passed from COVID. We personally know people whose businesses did not survive the shut down. I personally know people whose marriages were irreparably broken, crumbling under the immense stress of everything that was 2020.

The political strife also took its toll….on family connections and friendships. For better or for worse. I guess it remains to be seen.

2020 was a year unlike any other (I hope) ……but through ALL of it….I kept working. Best I could. I photographed seniors….I learned to work masked and distanced…..and helped brides and grooms plan wildly different weddings from what they originally had in mind. I stepped in for other photographers when they couldn’t work.

We just plugged along. Surviving.

How do you celebrate a disaster? By simply being relieved that you survived semi-in-tact. Sometimes, that’s all that matters. No big lessons. No great achievements. Just….survival.

So here’s the End of the Year Rundown….2020 Edition. Historic in it’s “sucktitude” (that’s a word. I say so.) and full of stories we’ll tell forever.
