Can We Have a Return to Professionalism, Please? ~ Wisconsin Photographer

This week, we in the photo industry got to witness "one of our own" (though I think we will all hesitate to call him that) go completely off the rails.

Now, if you've never heard of Jake Olson before this week apparently you're not alone. I had no clue who the dude was....but at 300,000 + "likes" and apparently uber famous, I was just living under a rock or something.

Jake Olson is a photographer out of Nebraska. He does some okay work (though he could probably do without shooting the exact same picture in the exact same spot over and over and over again....but I digress.....). He's also a major jerk. This isn't just my personal opinion....the man seems to PRIDE himself on being a major jerk. He's called out customers on his business page who DARED complain about his slow turn-around or his work, he's told other critics to "consider suicide", he's claimed to be world-famous and super-rich (both claims are pretty doubtful at this point).

Jake ran the gamut from saying the whole thing (years of being an abusive troll on the internet) was a marketing ploy.....to issuing what can only be called the most back-handed "I'm sorry you feel that way" apology-of-sorts in the history of photography-business screw ups.

A complaint email from a client and Jake's super professional response.

A complaint email from a client and Jake's super professional response.

What I saw as this all went down was a culmination of a social-media supported anti-professionalism movement that is running rampant through our industry.....as well as others.

And I'm here to ask.....is there anything WRONG with returning to an idea that the customer is gold and should be treated as such?

THE ME-CENTERED INDUSTRY

If you entered the photography industry in the last few years, you know that workshops, retreats, online-lessons have been gravitating towards building a business that is about "YOU". Your personality, your quirks....people are hiring YOU, not your work.  People took to their "About Me" pages in droves to talk about their passion, how they drink lattes in the morning during their editing sprees while donning pajamas, they talk about their kids (SO GUILTY of this one!)  and isn't that all very relate-able? Then, they sat back and watched their "likes" grow and their popularity swell because everyone wants to hire their BFF to be with them on their wedding day.

I did the same.....I've talked about my kids so much on my site in the last 8 years that people at the grocery store come up to me and say "OMG, is that Betty and Molly?!?!"

I have no idea who these people are. Kinda creepy.

But, I've been taught....nay....conditioned to think "Well hell, my reach is working"

However, have we created a monster? If it's all about US...the PERSON behind the camera, the PERSONALITY....what, then, of the customer? We are being tasked with capturing their day as a service to them, in a professional manner. And there are people out there with amazing personalities who still manage to do this incredibly well.

But then there are folks (**cough** Mr. Olson) who have gone off the rails so hard that it becomes so MUCH about them that they cannot see the needs of the customer anymore.
"They don't understand that I am SOMEBODY"....the customer, in their eyes, is trying to dictate their ART.....the customer is being out of line expecting a quick turnaround of their items or expecting timely service.

This is a major problem, folks. It reflects badly on us a service-based community, for sure. Granted, we are not all crazy cakes and we ALL fall victim to it sometimes. How many times, as a photographer, have you caught yourself saying "They just don't understand my style!"

And you know what, that may VERY WELL be the case! Sometimes we pair ourselves up with people who don't "get it".....that's human fallibility. I've had customers wonder why a "background was blurry" when I shot something at 1.4. A little irritating at first? Kinda....but it is then MY JOB to educated the customer....not get angry and all uppity about my "art".

LOOK AT MY CUTE KID....and then hire me : )

LOOK AT MY CUTE KID....and then hire me : )

CUSTOMER SERVICE IS CUSTOMER SERVICE

I've had a lot of people comment to me over the last 8 years how "fun" my job is and how "lucky" I am. How it must not feel like work.

And you know what? It IS fun. I AM lucky. Many days it really doesn't feel like work. I get to create for a living....I get to make fun stuff for people and I get to participate in BIG events in my clients' lives and that is awesome.

But, at the end of the day, it all comes back to be a customer service business. I have to maintain open, friendly communication with my clients. I have to turn their images around when I told them I would, regardless of what is going on in my life.

Now, of course there are extenuating circumstances. I remember when my grandmother died (because I'm ME centered, you've all heard that story....right? LOL ) ....I had a portrait session scheduled that week. I called 48 hours ahead of session time and told the client we would have to reschedule on account of the death. The client was unhappy with this and even went so far as to MENTION her disapproval with this at our rescheduled session. If that person had any idea how devastated I was.....how lucky she was that I even had the mindset to MAKE a rescheduling call at that point......whoa nellie.

Some people suck. They just do.  There was nothing I could have done in that situation to make this person happy....and I wasn't going to skip out on a funeral because she needed portraits. Priorities in that instance. However, these big time issues don't come about very often, and I have to say that in the 8 years I've been doing this.....I've only had to reschedule on account of my own issues maybe a baby handful of times. That doesn't make me some perfect person....good God no....but it does make me someone who has a feverish dedication to the service I provide and the needs of those hiring me. They count on me and I don't want to let them down.

Just because they're your clients doesn't mean they're always right, absolutely not. But, our job is to under-promise and absolutely over-deliver without letting our "Me-Centered Business Model" get in the way as excuses.

Don't give your clients a reason to walk away from you

Don't give your clients a reason to walk away from you

YOUR REPUTATION WILL PRECEDE YOU EVENTUALLY

There's a saying that there's no such thing as bad publicity. Will Mr. Olson (he of the "go kill yourself, I'm a genius" variety) still have a thriving business after all this hub-bub dies down? Eh....probably. People love a trainwreck. They love to be a part of it...whether it be as a detractor or a supporter ("You GO Dude! Don't let the HATERS get you down!")

But lets think about this for a second, if you are finding yourself with a litany of "hater-ade" lately.....there's a problem there. The community is letting you know that you're going down a bad path. Maybe it's better to listen....

I regularly check out the reviews out there in my industry. I want to know WHAT the customer base is thinking. What things are people doing that are irritating them?

What I find MOST often? Slow turnaround. Bad communication. These are HUGE. If a client feels like they're getting the shaft, they're not being given what was promised, or you're ignoring them....they're going to get pissed.

Think about when YOU'RE a client. Do you like going to a salon and waiting 45 minutes in a chair for the hairdresser of your choice to acknowledge you? Of course not. You would be completely irritated. Do you like feeling like "just a number" in a litany of clients when you call your insurance company or your doctor? Like you're not special or unique in any way. That they don't really NEED you, because they have so many others to take your place?

Crappy feelings, right?

One of my TOP 10 PET PEEVES is lack of communication from someone I'm trying to get service from. If I send an email inquiry to a business....or call them on the phone...and I get no response from my message or a very very slow response....you could probably bet I'm not going to give them my business. If they can't return a simple email....how are they going to be when they're actually providing the service? (And don't even get me STARTED on a business that doesn't bother to have a website. In the words of Mr. Wonderful, you're dead to me).

Underpromise......Overdeliver......

Underpromise......Overdeliver......

Eventually, the market will have spoken. Think of crazy-train examples like Amy's Baking Company . People who let it all get SO far away from being customer-centered that they became world famous.

That's a really extreme example, but I see glimpses of it all the time. We live our lives out on social media and sometimes that can come back and bite us in the butt.

FEAR IS OUR MOTIVE

I think we fear being left behind in the dust. We fear not having the "likes"....we fear not being relevant in this industry because we are trying SO hard to have our voice heard above the din of a very crowded community.

Think of it from the CLIENT'S perspective! There's THOUSANDS of us....just in Wisconsin alone. So many "photographers" throwing their marketing plans at the client and just hoping, praying that something sticks!

So I think we feel if we put it all out there: the "me" centered marketing, the quirky stories about our kids or our dogs or our napping habits, the problems we have in our business....everything for the world to see, read, and comment on....that will set us apart. We will be remembered.
They will take a side, and hopefully that side is with us.

What would happen if we just ran our businesses like businesses? If we just gave excellent service, amazing product, and did what people asked us to do in a timely manner? What if it were all that simple? No goose laying golden eggs. No trickery. Just a return to the age-old idea of ma and pa and the friendly corner store?

What would happen?

Does this mean I'll stop blogging about the fam or my kiddos or stop injecting a bit of my own brand of "weird" into what I do? Probably not....I like that it's part of my business (and lets face it, I like the occasional random blog)....but it's not everything.

I'd like to see. I'd like to return a bit to a more classic customer service based industry. Less us, more them. The people who built our businesses in the first place.

Right, Mr. Olson?

Updates, Upbeat, and Up Late ~ Wisconsin Photographer

Been falling back into my cozy pattern of working from home and booking weddings/portraits/seniors....feels like home. Feels right. Good stuff.

This is just a kindly little update on what will be going down in the next 10 weeks as I prepare to become a mother to three kids.

Oy vey.

First, MARCH - March is nearly here and I will be booking all I can through the month to fit in folks before summer and maternity leave.

The 2 biggest events: SPRING FLING MINI SESSIONS, taking place on March 19 & 20th, and Senior Model Studio Sessions.

SPRING FLING MINI SESSIONS
Since I will be going on maternity leave in April and not returning until mid-May, this will be the only time to get in spring portraits with Type A for Mother's Day, Easter, etc.  I have put together a series of spring-inspired backdrops and will be offering 2 full shooting days to accommodate everyone. I still have open times available on both days!

Purchase your spot here:

SENIOR MODEL STUDIO SESSIONS

I've had quite a few folks interested in being Senior Models for the Class of 2017. We've gone ahead and scheduled their in-studio sessions for March. I am still seeking a few ladies to fill in some open Model Spots!

If you are an area high school junior and you're of the gal variety, I wanna talk to you! Studio sessions will be completed in March and then on-location sessions can be done at any time.

Senior Models receive huge discounts AND incentives!

WEDDING BOOKINGS
I have been booking up Summer 2016 but I still have a few dates here or there for Fall 2016 before I shut it down completely. Now that I am no longer working a full-time non-photography related position, I can take on more weddings. Woot!  So, if you're a little behind the 8-ball planning wise, I'm happy to chat!  October, November, and December brides and grooms? This means you!

2017 is open for business as well!

Best way to reach me? Pop on over to the contact form and send me a message about your plans!

SPEAKING of plans.....plans are shaping up for this summer.   I still feel it's completely surreal that come June, which is just a mere 4 months away, I'll have another ginger baby (odds are) on my lap!  Exciting things are in store for 2016, for sure!

Like LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.  The lease on the old Type A/Tin Dog/What-have-you/Downtown State St. building is up in July (no worries, audiophiles, Tin Dog will still be there). With that change is a move coming....an EXCITING move. I can't reveal TOO many details about it yet, suffice it to say I am JAZZED about the new home of Type A and everything that's coming with it!   Namely, I won't be shooting in about 200 square feet of no space anymore....PRAISE THE LORD.

OTHER STUFF

So yeah, I've had quite a bit going on in February....it's been a month of definite change and upheaval....which honestly is kind of fun (scary as all get out too!).

I've started a little side project and I'd LOVE if you'd go check it out, if it's up your alley. One of my "hobbies", I guess you could call it, is personal finance. I friggin' love personal finance books, blogs, articles, whatever. Yeah. Nerd. I know. Yawn. I promise you, though, it CAN be interesting! It can!

I saw a real need for an honest look at debt repayment, budgeting, and making the whole money management thing work and still LIVING life....so I started my own PF blog called The Pudgy Gazelle.

It may bore you to DEATH....so if you're an insomniac it may be worth a look as well. But, I try to keep it fun

Thanks for hangin' in, folks. I've gotten SO many awesome messages in the last few weeks since resigning my full-time director position and it's made me feel very good about my decision.

The world keeps turning and it can be a fun ride : )

That Time I Said Yes

Ahhhh Valentine's Day. It's nearly upon us. The day of fuzzy stuffed love-bears and sappy cards, chocolates and flowers, and....in past years, stacks of magazines (my man knows what I like).

I've never been overly huge on the day, myself. Not being terribly sappy or sentimental about most things. It's always just been a "day". We buy cute stuff for the kids....indulge in a little chocolate here or there. Then life rambles on.

11 years ago, my now-husband (the not-too-oft-mentioned Jon) and I were living in a loft apartment in Waukesha. We were not married. Not engaged. Not anything yet. We lived together. And this bugged me. Mostly because I am a planner. We had been together for a few years and I wanted to know his PLAN. His INTENTIONS, if you will.  I didn't know him well enough at that point to know he's not much of a planner. He's more of a "go-with-the-flow" type.

As you can imagine, this led to some....strongly worded discussions, if you will. I'm sure I said something along the lines of "poo or get off the pot" (you know, the less PG rated version) more than once.

I was a Peach, I tell ya. : )

But I was 25. I was young, dumb, impatient, anxious.....and if he liked it so much he needed to put a ring on it, dammit. (Unfortunately Beyonce didn't hand down this nugget of wisdom that I could use to my advantage until YEARS later. Thanks for nothin', Bey)

Christmas 2004 came and went with no ring under the tree and I started 2005 a bit more than annoyed.

We were joining his parents on the annual February trip to Cancun that year. Over the course of our trip, Valentine's was going down....so we made reservations at a local restaurant.

By this time I was pretty much convinced he didn't want to get married....and our dealings on the subject had dissolved into snarky comments and wistful "oh wouldn't THAT be nice" passive aggressiveness.

Bear in mind here, folks, before you start thinking I'm a complete shrew....I was 25. : ) And I carried with me all the maturity and life-experience that comes with that age. So, pretty much nil.

Cancun was lovely, and we had a wonderful time. On February 13th, Valentine's Eve, we headed out to a local restaurant and ate under the stars. I chose this time to...again....pick his brain about our "future". He was pretty dismissive.....I was annoyed. Boo on Valentine's and everything associated with it.

We left the restaurant and ended back at the villa. The night was warm and beautiful. I retreated to the bedroom and put on some jammie pants and an oversized t-shirt.

No one can say I don't know how to "slip into something more comfortable".

We decided to hang out on the patio and listen to the waves.

The only thing going through my head was "Another Valentine's come and gone....another opportunity he didn't take.....grrrrr."

Again. 25.

Then dude did the completely unexpected.

He pulled out a ring.

And he asked.

And I was completely dumbfounded.

And then my only thought was "I'm wearing jammie pants"

Oh, and yes. I said yes : )

That was 11 years ago. This year we celebrate 10 years of marriage. 10 years. 3 kids. 1 dog. 2 houses (so far). A move....a bigger move. 2 businesses. A few other jobs here and there. Countless decisions made and chances taken.

If I could go back and talk to 25 year old me, I'd tell her to cool her damn jets. That it all comes in time. That patience, my dear, is a wonderful virtue (I'm still working on that).

If it's all meant to be, it'll happen. Just, perhaps, not the way you were expecting it to.

He did want to get married. He was just throwing me off my game. Because I'm a planner....and he's not so much....but together we steer the ship right and make this whole mess work in some way.

And that's my sappy Valentine's post for this year : )

Let's Call it A Day

Anyone who knows me or has followed me online long enough (all...what...10 of you?) ...knows I'm an open book here.

You've followed me through the loss of my corporate job in early 2008, starting Type A at the same time, the death of the most important person in my world, the birth of the most important person in my world...and then the next....and now the next....., moving back to Beloit, studio hops, and starting the hospice program. Countless business moves, some successful....some suck-tastic.  Opening a record store....closing a record store.

In 8 years I've laid it all out. Most of it. Struggles with major grief....with learning to be a mom....with running 2 businesses that supported my family....with struggling with my "place in the world" like so many others.

Social media is a fabulous tool, but it can also contribute to a marginal amount of depression when it seems like everyone else has it all figured out....and you're over here, in the corner, still wondering what the heck you want to be when you grow up. At 35.

Also, when you're a pretty persistent blogger...you feel compelled to "explain yourself" to people a lot. Even if it's just the handful that actually read this stuff.

I am a creature of persistence.  Of WORK. I am built from a stock that could easily work circles around the average Joe.

So when I started a new adventure in July 2015.....as director of an assisted living facility....my whole goal was to WORK harder....soak in as much information as possible....and with regards to the things I didn't know...seek answers.

I had run my own business for 7 years....and I knew all too well the issues with the state of the photography industry (in a word....supply was starting to way overtake demand for the service I provide). I felt hungry for change, for a risk, for exploring the great unknown. I also had a good amount of fear. Running your own business is the very definition of pure insanity. The variable income, the unknown amount of work, the slow periods married with flush periods. It's not for the faint of heart.  I needed to see if the grass was greener....or if it was just Astroturf.

If I'm being honest with myself....completely....it didn't take me too long to realize my new job was probably not a very good fit for me. For a number of reasons. But, I'm not a quitter. The weak quit. The lazy quit. I wasn't going to let myself fail.

But, as time wore on, my gut was telling me it wasn't right....and my blood pressure started to agree. I had a history of pre-eclampsia and a high risk pregnancy that I wasn't exactly putting at the forefront of my priorities. Until it made itself apparent in the form of a pretty scary blood pressure spike that threw me for a loop, and left me reexamining exactly what I was doing.

I knew the path I was trying to navigate needed to be abandoned. And that was a very hard conclusion to come to. So many people had been excited for me, rooted for me....so many had come out and supported this new world. I had people I had connected with who were going to put trust in me to provide them with a new home...people I had become very fond of.

With each "Hope the new job is going GREAT!" I felt a pang of guilt. What if I was to be honest. What if I said "well...actually......"

For all the good...the exciting....I could no longer overlook the toll this new adventure was taking on my health and the structure of my family life. Something my husband and I had vowed to keep sacred when we sold Tin Dog.  I was coming home defeated....exhausted....with nothing left to give really to anyone else.

I realized quickly that the grass on my side of the fence could be plenty green if I just took the time to friggin' water it once in awhile.

So, I resigned.

And I have to tell you, I felt like someone lifted the proverbial weight of the world from my shoulders.

I went to my OB and what had been nearly a hypertensive crisis just 24 hours before righted itself. That was enough convincing for me. As difficult as it would be to walk away....and then attempt to save face in the aftermath....I had to. It was right.

So what now?

I feel okay saying "You know what.....I don't know". There's a bit of power in that. A bit of adventure to come.  I know Type A is still here....still hustlin'. I know that in about 11 weeks I'm going to be a mother of three. I know that I'm entering into a new adventure space-wise this summer (details of that coming soon!). I know that Jon and I have plans in the works....a few months or years down the line....and who knows where that'll take us but some days it fills me with so much excitement I just want to chuck it all and do everything RIGHT NOW! I'm wildly impatient like that....and impractical sometimes.

I know it's not always going to be easy, but damn if it doesn't feel RIGHT.

It's okay to quit.
It's okay to say no more.
It's okay to say "I'm not right for this".

These days we struggle with these notions....and we shouldn't. We can never begin greatness if we are off attempting to make something work that just won't out of pure stubbornness or peer pressure.

People leave jobs. They make decisions that change the course of their lives. They end friendships. They end marriages. They have babies and they send their babies off into the world. They move....they stay still....turn, turn turn.

I appreciate EVERYONE who has followed along on my bumpy little journey, and who were so dang supportive when I decided to take a leap and see what happens.  I hope you'll all join me in welcoming back full-time hours to Type A : )

And I can say....don't fear taking risks simply because some don't work out. Take risks....jump and see where you land....it injects wonder into life. And if it doesn't work out....stand up, dust yourself off, and begin again. You are human, you are wonderfully fallible but wonderfully capable as well.

Life is cruelly short....and we are given a finite amount of time to do our best.....spend it as happy as you possibly can.
